The top reasons why people change careers

Unlike in decades past, people don’t have a job for life anymore. They don’t even stay in the same career. People change careers between 3 and 7 times during their working lives.

While it’s understandable that people look for other jobs, what makes people want to change careers entirely?

Here are some main reasons that push people to find a new path in their working lives.

Job loss

Losing a job is often a catalyst for a career change. Some people decide to retrain for a different sector, and others take the opportunity to build their own businesses or become self-employed. Many dream about working for themselves and making a career move, but it sometimes takes an unexpected push.

Change of values

Our priorities can change as we go through life, and what used to make us happy no longer does. Some people decide that they want to do something that makes a difference, helps people, and gives them many chances for growth and development.

To follow a passion

If someone follows a career path for the money and no longer finds it fulfilling, it might be time to consider shifting gears and following a path that aligns with your true passions. Whether you’ve always dreamed of becoming a journalist, owning a pet store, or providing care and support to the elderly, making this change can bring a sense of purpose and joy to your professional life.

For instance, if you have always had a deep desire to care for older adults, you might explore opportunities in Philadelphia home care jobs, or similar fields elsewhere. This path can allow you to make a meaningful impact by providing vital support to seniors, helping them maintain their independence and enjoy a better quality of life. Similarly, if you have always been passionate about animals and dream of working with them, you might consider opening a pet store or working in animal care.

Fortunately, there are many retraining opportunities available that can help you turn your interests into a fulfilling career. Whether it’s through formal education programs, online courses, or hands-on training, these resources can equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to successfully transition into your new career path.

To find a challenge

After a while, work may become unfulfilling and no longer present a challenge. Some people like this, others need to feel a constant forward momentum in their lives. If there are no opportunities to increase the challenge in their current career, then changing it is an option.

They don’t like their career

Being unhappy in your job can affect every area of your life negatively. If you’re working in a field that doesn’t interest you, or worse, you hate, then it makes sense to look to make a change.

Many people end up in a career through circumstance rather than a plan. Often, you take a job to pay some bills, but then you stay, moving up the ranks. Before you know it, you’re in a career you didn’t plan for and don’t like.

Or perhaps you used to love what you did, and the sector has changed around you.

You want to slow down and do other things

Many careers leave little time for family and friends, never mind any other interests you may have. In the past, we’ve been conditioned always to want more, to do better, and to achieve more. But what if you're going to move some of your attention elsewhere? Sometimes, moving into a less stressful or time-consuming career can free us up to pursue other passions and interests.

Conclusion

The world of work is much more flexible than it used to be. Technology and access to training and education make it easier than ever to change careers. This accessibility gives people a more significant opportunity to fulfil their ambitions, whatever they may be.
