The economic crisis has brought business to a halt in many fields. This means that it’s difficult for recent graduates to get their careers started. There is a higher rate of unemployment, and many companies just can’t afford to take chances. For those of you who have just finished your degree, don’t let these obstacles get in your way just yet. Here are some examples of this year’s challenges and how you can overcome them.

Unemployment

Learn to be persistent. Unfortunately, 2020 isn’t going to be the best year to graduate. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the economy, there has been a surge in unemployment. This is the result of social distancing restrictions and increased risk. CBO has forecast a 16% unemployment rate this summer, and further into 2021. To overcome this, the best thing you can do is be proactive and get the ball rolling early. Apply for as many things as possible and branch out into different sectors. Remember that the crash will only be temporary.

Lack of choice

Learn to be flexible. Although it’ll be more difficult to find work in your preferred domain, you will get a job faster by making more effort to look and taking more risks. This year it’s important to prioritize work over choice, start earning money, and gain experience. After the temporary crash, it’ll be easier for you to change fields and you’ll have some transferable skills as well.

Online focus

Sharpen your digital skills. At the moment more than ever, employers are looking to hire people who are capable to work online and have a high level of IT skills. The digitalization of many fields has been accelerated, so you mustn’t lose out because of a gap in your skills. This is the future of most businesses so spend your time unemployed preparing yourself for a digital job.

Too much time off

Prepare for the next qualification. If you’re not getting anywhere with your job search, now is the time to move on to further education. Make the most of this temporary lull and do an online Master’s or that online doctor of physical therapy program you always planned on doing. Make this time count towards your future.

Stuck at home

Take advantage of the many benefits of eLearning. Just because you’re not allowed to go to classes doesn’t mean you can’t study. Online courses are just as prestigious as in-person ones, and there are even discounts and offers due to the current situation. Use your time at home to the fullest by studying a new course online, and prepare yourself for the next stage. For example, International A Levels can be advantageous for those wishing to attend a British university, so it's worth researching how to complete them online in time for the next academic year.

It’s inevitable that this year and the next are going to be challenging. The best thing you can do is focus on the end game. You have plenty of time to finally concentrate on your studies and finding the right path for you. Any experience you gain along the way will only be beneficial.
